Innovation creating safety

Safety by Cilia was born from a vision to combine personal safety with elegant design. Determined to create a product that feels like jewellery rather than a conventional safety device, they partnered with Sigma Connectivity to turn this idea into reality. Together, they developed a discreet, stylish, and technically robust bracelet that empowers women by providing immediate access to safety features like GPS positioning and audio recording. The collaboration reflects a seamless blend of innovation, design, and social impact.

For Safety by Cilia’s founder, Cissi Nilsson, it was essential to find a partner who could turn her vision into reality – a discreet yet powerful solution that feels as much like a piece of jewellery as it does a personal safety tool.

“When we began working with Sigma Connectivity, the challenge was clear – there was no product that could combine personal safety with a design that felt natural. I wanted to create something that not only worked technically but was also discreet and stylish – a piece of jewellery that provides safety without being intimidating or obvious. The goal was to give women a tangible tool for safety in their daily lives,” says Cissi.

Sigma Connectivity played a central role in developing Safety by Cilia’s safety bracelet, from the first technical concepts to a complete, market-ready product.

“We’ve been their full R&D partner for all hardware, including finding the right manufacturing partner, and supply chain. Our work covered the entire process – from antenna and RF design to software, power solutions and, integration with the app,” explains Daniel Zetterlund at Sigma Connectivity WSI.

Although the product itself is technically simple, with a single button and Bluetooth connection, the team faced significant challenges. Sigma Connectivity took over the project from a previous development partner and needed to quickly adapt to an existing technical structure under a very tight deadline.

“We inherited a technical setup, and a very short lead time, which meant we had to be extremely efficient in our process to recover lost time. It required close collaboration, fast decisions, and a lot of creativity,” Daniel explains.

That challenge was met with clear communication and a flexible way of working, where both teams were able to leverage their respective strengths.

“We maintained continuous dialogue, and Sigma Connectivity truly listened to our needs. They combined technical expertise with an understanding of the user’s reality, which allowed us to test and implement solutions quickly,” says Cissi.

The partnership between Cilia and Sigma Connectivity has been built on shared values around innovation, responsibility, and a desire to create technology that makes a real difference.

“It’s been a perfect partnership on every level, where Cilia’s capabilities blended with ours, resulting in a product that’s now on the market – and selling better than expected,” says Daniel.

For Sigma Connectivity, the project reflects both their technical expertise and their core values.

“We’re strong in wearable technology and have led several projects aimed at empowering women. This is another step in the right direction,” says Daniel, adding: “That’s been the main driving force for us. Everyone wanted to be part of this – not just because of the technical challenge, but because the product genuinely helps make the world a safer place.”

The Cilia bracelet is a clear example of how design, and technology can come together to create real social impact. With a discreet press of a button, both GPS positioning and audio recording are activated – features that can be crucial in a threatening situation.

“Sigma Connectivity’s technical expertise has been absolutely essential. By integrating the technology required to trigger GPS positioning and audio recording with a single press, they made my vision of increased safety a reality,” says Cissi.

Both parties see the collaboration as long-term. Development is already underway for the next product – a smart lipstick with additional features and even more advanced technology. A third product, focusing on further miniaturization and refined functionality, is also in the pipeline.

“We view the collaboration as long-term and aim to develop more safety products. Sigma Connectivity is an obvious partner in these projects,” says Cissi.

For her, the work is ultimately about creating a sense of freedom and confidence.

“Seeing people wear the product and knowing it can bring safety and empowerment is incredibly meaningful. It reminds me why we started Safety by Cilia – to help build a world where more people can live without fear,” she concludes.
